Parish Letter – Ascension 2018

May 10, 2018 – Feast of the Ascension

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we celebrate the ascension of Jesus into heaven and wind down the Easter season, I wanted to reach out to everyone to inform them of two important upcoming events.  As we have been reminded of in the gospel readings in recent weeks, we are connected to each other, we are a part of a branch that connects us to the true vine that is Jesus.  An important part of being a member of the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement is our relationship with our bishop.

To that end, our bishop, the Rt. Rev. Franklin Brookhart, will be making his annual visitation on Sunday, May 20, 2018.  He will be with us for our regular services of 9 am in Miles City and 11:30 am in Forsyth.  This will be an especially significant visitation because Bishop Brookhart has announced his retirement, which will be effective on November 1, 2018.  So please make every effort to attend this very special Sunday.

On a related note, the diocese has begun the long process of searching for a new bishop.  I was recently asked by the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Montana to serve on the Nominating Committee for the next bishop.  As part of that role, on June 10, 2018, the Third Sunday after Pentecost, I will be hosting a listening session at both churches following services to find out the interests and priorities of the members of our congregations.  This is being done at every church in the diocese as the search process continues. More information about the search process will be shared at that time, so please make every effort to join us.

Finally, I want to leave you with the prayer that the Standing Committee has asked us to keep on our hearts as we go through the search and transition process.

Loving God, raise up for the Diocese of Montana a shepherd who will lead with compassion, with courage and with comprehension of the needs of all your people, that we may be led by a bishop who is committed to ministering from the mountains to the plains, from cities to rural areas always remembering the poor, the marginalized and those with no voice.  This we ask Father in the name of your Son, Jesus, in the unity of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Yours in Christ,

Father Stephen
